Daylight Savings just gifted us an extra hour of sleep—a cozy little bonus! But as we settle into shorter days, longer nights, and for many of us, colder weather, it’s not uncommon to feel a little blue. For some, these seasonal shifts can bring on a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD typically arises in fall and winter due to the reduced sunlight, which can affect brain chemistry and lead to symptoms of depression. Some common signs include feeling low on energy, oversleeping, experiencing aches and pains, increased appetite, or losing interest in activities you usually enjoy. SAD can sometimes lead to thoughts of suicide. (If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out to the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 for support.)
Thankfully, there are ways to manage and ease the symptoms of SAD—light therapy, vitamin D, talk therapy, and, in some cases, antidepressants. Cognitive therapy can also be beneficial, and one particularly soothing form of therapy is engaging in creative activities. Studies have shown that art and creativity can increase dopamine and serotonin levels, helping lift your mood and infusing those dark days with a sense of purpose and joy.
Here are three simple, creativity-focused activities, with journaling options, to help you combat the winter blues and bring a little extra warmth to your days.
1. Create a Winter Vision Board A winter vision board is a wonderful way to keep your mind focused on positivity, goals, and self-care. Start by gathering images, words, and colors that bring you a sense of joy and comfort. Think of it as a visual reminder to stay centered and motivated. Keep it somewhere you’ll see it often, especially on those low-energy days.
- Journaling Option: Reflect on the opportunities you're most looking forward to this winter. What are your intentions for the season, and how do you want to feel as you move through it?
2. Seasonal Crafting for Comfort and Connection Dive into a few seasonal DIY projects, holiday decorations, or winter-themed crafts that feel cozy and comforting. You can find endless ideas on Pinterest or Google—just search “winter crafts for adults.” Even scrolling through these ideas offers a little dopamine boost! The act of crafting something with your hands can be soothing and keep you feeling connected to the season in a positive way.
- Journaling Option: Write about the colors, textures, and shapes that feel comforting to you this winter. How do you plan to bring them into your creative projects?
3. Light Therapy with Colorful Art Bright colors can have a mood-lifting effect, mimicking the brightness of sunlight. Choose colors that feel warm and welcoming to you, and try painting, crafting, coloring, or even designing something digitally in these shades. The act of creating with vibrant colors can bring some sunshine into your day.
- Journaling Option: After completing your project, ask yourself why you chose those particular colors. What positive feelings did they evoke, and how do you want to incorporate more of these into your daily life?
Getting Started: Finding Motivation and a Cozy Creative Space It can be tough to get motivated during the colder months, so start small. Carve out a small, cozy space in your home to make creativity feel inviting. This doesn’t have to be a new space—your kitchen table, your favorite chair by a window, or even a little corner with good lighting can work. I often use my own kitchen table; it’s a warm yellow, and the surrounding windows let in light, even on gloomy days. Find a spot that feels warm and welcoming to you. Then, start with a quick, manageable creative task. Doodling, journaling, or sketching for just 10-15 minutes each morning can offer a powerful mood boost and a sense of accomplishment.
